Electronic dance music is breaking all-time records in financial terms this year. The recently released IMS Business Report 2025 predicts that the global EDM business will reach an all-time high of $12.9 billion in 2025.
At the same time, the EDM industry is facing profound structural and cultural changes, from emerging genres and markets to the impact of artificial intelligence and the difficulties of indie publishing.
EDM has firmly established itself as a key pillar of the global music industry. It is growing by six percent year-on-year. This is slightly slower than the previous nine percent growth, but still a significant achievement in a complex market environment, the report states.
Despite the slight slowdown in growth, the report states that the EDM industry is on the threshold of an exciting new chapter. The clearly emerging subgenres of EDM are currently Afro House and Amapiano. In addition, the revival of classic sounds such as jungle and Drum & Bass is creating additional momentum and a new wave of innovation.
One of the most highlighted trends in the report is the growing dominance of streaming platforms. Last year, they had a total of 818 million subscribers worldwide, up 12 percent from the previous year. 80 percent of this growth came from markets in the global south. Spotify leads the market with a 32 percent share with over 250 million subscribers.
Despite the rise in the number of users of streaming services, the financial benefits for artists remain uneven, and streaming fees for smaller content producers have slowed significantly, the report highlights. At the same time, major labels remain the kings of the industry, but the indie sector continues to grow strongly.
